The NHS defines early menopause as periods stopping before 45 and premature menopause as before 40. That is the clinical window this kind of genetics work is trying to sharpen. If a gene can help explain why some women move into ovarian decline years earlier than expected, it could eventually support earlier fertility counselling, faster referral and more timely discussion of hormone treatment for women with symptoms in their 30s or early 40s.
The clearest technical link so far came from JCI Insight, which published Genetic variants in HELB contribute to premature ovarian insufficiency and early age of natural menopause on 10 November 2025. The paper focused on one affected Chinese family and used knock-in mouse work to test the biology. That is an early research signal, not a clinical tool: one family does not make HELB a screening test, and it is not something women can order or act on as a treatment decision today.
The practical value, if the signal holds up, is in risk stratification. Women with a family history of early menopause, irregular cycles in their 30s, fertility problems or unexplained loss of ovarian function could eventually be identified earlier for specialist review. That could mean quicker ovarian reserve assessment, more informed fertility-planning decisions and earlier monitoring of bone and cardiovascular health, which matter once ovarian hormones fall.
This sits inside a wider research shift.
